Info
This series is set in New South Wales, Australia, shortly after the end of World War II. After 20 years living in Europe, and surviving the war, Sarah Adams, is returning to her home in Inverness, Australia. While on board the ship, she saves a young man, James Bligh, from jumping overboard. She learns, when she arrives in her hometown of Inverness, that James is the son of the most influential landowners in the area. She is threatened by the matriarch, Elizabeth Bligh, that she must keep his suicide attempt confidential. What Elizabeth would really like to do is drive Sarah out of town. This, together with Sarah’s complicated romance with George Bligh, another son, and her conversion to Judaism, create multiple issues and heartaches.

This film is roughly what the title suggests—a captivatingly filmed, deeply romantic drama of immense intelligence and distinguished by a superb cast.
The rhythm of Lee’s writing, the tempo of the acting, the swell of Michael Yezerski’s Hollywood-style score, the camera angles, the moody lighting, the harmonious editing are just right. There is not an extraneous shot in Barrett’s direction, or one that is missing.
A period melodrama that delivers nonstop intrigue and cliffhangers along with pointed social critique. There are a dizzying number of interwoven plot strands that involve romances complicated by class, religion, sexual orientation, tragic pregnancies, mysterious deaths (and mysterious reappearances of people thought dead), anti-Semitism, and homophobia.
If you appreciate thought-provoking, socially conscious period dramas with some darker themes, memorable characters, and fantastic storytelling, then A PLACE to CALL HOME makes for a wonderful choice.
