She Loves Me

2016 | Broadway/Musical | Running Time: 2:13 | Book (Joe Masterhof); Music (Jerry Bock); Lyrics (Sheldon Harnick); Director (Scott Ellis)

Info

The musical play takes place in a fancy perfumery in Budapest operated by Zoltan Maraczek, a very strict but warm-hearted boss. There is a lot going on with the employees: Georg, the shy assistant manager, has been exchanging pen pal letters with an anonymous woman he knows only as “Dear Friend.” Maraczek, recalling his bachelor days (“Days Gone By”) advises Georg to just get married. Also working in the store is the sassy Ilona who is having an affair with the suave Kodaly (“Ilona”). Then there is Ladislav, a fretful middle-aged salesman. Georg is totally unaware that he’s been corresponding with fellow employee, Amalie, with whom he bickers constantly.  When Amalie calls in sick, Georg visits her, cheering her up by bringing her ice cream. Amalie enjoys the visit (“Vanilla Ice Cream”) while Georg rejoices that for the first time he’s seeing Amalia in a different light (“She Loves Me.”). Surprisingly, Georg and Amalie still do not know they are the pen pals writing each other. But, after all, this is a musical comedy, so they eventually, and joyfully, do find out. They embrace and the show ends with a happy finale.

Why Stream This Film?
She Loves Me had the misfortune of opening the same year when there was a revival of Fiddler on the Roof, coincidentally another Bock and Harnick musical. Had She Loves Me opened the year before or after, it would have copped every major TONY for a Revival of a Musical. She Loves Me was the first Broadway musical to be live streamed to the entire world. What a wonderful gift.
Accolades
  • Tony Awards: Nominated, Best Revival of a Musical; Nominated, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Laura Benanti); Nominated,  Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Jane Krakowski)
  • Drama Desk Awards: Winner, Outstanding Revival of a Musical; Winner, Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Jane Krakowski)
  • Outer Critics Circle Awards: Winner, Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical (Jane Krakowski)
The Roundabout Theater Company’s enchanting Broadway revival of SHE LOVES ME is so charming, you kind of wish it would follow you home.

VARIETY

A rapturously revived new production by the Roundabout Theater Company. This tasty tale of love lost and found at the workplace is the great vanilla ice cream musical. The cheerful seamlessness of SHE LOVES ME defies deconstruction.
