Sophie Scholl—The Final Days
Docudrama | German with English subtitles | 117 minutes
Info
In World War II Munich, Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans, join the White Rose, an anti-Nazi group. Sophie, along with fellow members of the White Rose, mimeographs flyers they place outside the doors of the lecture halls at Munich University. Impulsively, Sophie throws a stack of flyers over the edge of the balustrade. A Nazi-sympathizing janitor catches Sophie and notifies the Gestapo. Sophie, Hans, and Christoph Probst, are charged with treason and abetting the enemy. The Gestapo, Robert Mohr, ruthless at first, becomes sympathetic and tries to convince Sophie to recant and save herself from being executed. He doesn’t succeed. Before the execution, Sophie and Hans’s parents visit. They express approval of what they’ve done. Mohr comes to the prison and sadly watches Sophie being taken away. As Sophie enters the courtyard, she looks up and says, “The sun is still shining.”
