Info
In a tragic car accident, Julie survives while her husband, Patrice, a famous symphony composer, and her daughter, are killed. After release from the hospital, Julie empties her country home, destroys Patrice’s unfinished score, and rents an apartment in Paris. In a TV interview, Julie hears Olivier, Patrice’s former music collaborator, state that he intends to complete the symphony they were working on. The interview also includes a video showing Patrice involved with an attractive young woman. Enraged, Julie asks Olivier to stop working on the symphony while she tracks down Patrice’s supposed mistress. Her name is Sandrine. Julie meets Sandrine, notices she is pregnant and is told the father is Patrice. In an act of extreme generosity, Julie offers Sandrine her house, which she says would be ideal for raising a child. Julie also restarts her relationship with Olivier and is now willing to help him complete the score. The symphony is performed. It concludes with a Greek chorus praising the divine love in Saint Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians.

In BLUE, the Polish filmmaker Kieslowski’s penetrating, hypnotic meditation on liberty and loss, the title refers not only to the visual palette of the film but also to its dominant mood. Juliette Binoche has just the right quality of wounded bereavement to make us feel that the woman is capable of anything: that she feels liberated, enraged, free as a bird.
There is nothing ordinary or banal about the way Kieslowski has gone about his business here. Though he starts with conventional story elements, he conveys them with a striking combination of focused acting, unexpected images, music strong enough to be a physical presence, and a sensitivity to light, color and textures.
