After losing his acting job and his girlfriend, Jake Scully finds himself adrift and homeless. His fellow actor, Sam Bouchard, offers Jake a place to stay. Sam’s rich friend is on trip in Europe and needs someone to house-sit in his palatial Hollywood home. While Sam shows Jake around the house Sam points out a special feature: a powerful telescope that will allow Jake to view a gorgeous female neighbor, Gloria Revelle, who erotically dances at a specific time each night. Jack voyeuristically watches Gloria. One night he witnesses her being attacked by an intruder and killed. While a bereft Jake is watching a movie on a pornographic TV channel, he notices an actress, Holly Body, dancing sexually, exactly as Gloria did. Pretending to be a porn producer, Jack manages to meet Holly. This leads him to the world of porn, but more frightening, to events that put him in great danger.

Why Stream This Film?
Initially, Body Double received lukewarm success with critics calling it overly seductive bordering on porn. De Palma had to re-edit the film so the MPAA rating could be changed from “X” to “R.” However, over the years, film critics and the public began to regard the film as brilliant. Today it’s considered a cult classic.

BODY DOUBLE is an exhilarating exercise in pure filmmaking, a thriller in the Hitchcock tradition in which there’s no particular point except that the hero is flawed, weak, and in terrible danger – and we identify with him completely. The movie is so cleverly constructed, with the emphasis on visual storytelling rather than dialogue, that we are neither faster nor slower than the hero as he gradually figures out the scheme that has entrapped him.
BODY DOUBLE is the first De Palma film to make me think that all of his practice is leading to the beginnings of perfection. The first hour represents the most restrained, accomplished, and effective filmmaking he’s ever done.
