Info

Tanya, a Russian divorcée, and her 10-year-old son Artyom, arrive in London from Moscow where Tanya expects to meet her fiancé. To Tanya’s dismay, her fiancé never shows up. Desperate, with no prospects for employment, Tanya applies for political asylum. She is told that the process to approve asylum will take 12 to 16 months. To wait out the process, Tanya and her son are taken to a holding area in a rundown seaside resort. Friendless and broke, Tanya takes a job as a model for a porn filmmaker. She and Artyom find some joy in meeting Alfie, a good-natured arcade manager, but it’s not enough. Tanya decides to return to Moscow. But, she is told, to rescind the asylum process will take three to six months. Tanya feels hope slipping but she still holds on to her humanity.

LAST RESORT bridges feature and documentary styles, thanks in part to the haunting cinematography of Ryszard  Lenczewski, who captures the gray poetry of the shore in winter as well as the ugly sprawl of the concrete high-rises that the immigrants must call home. LAST RESORT gives grim and gritty a good name.

The Washington Post

LAST RESORT has the compression and clarity of a good short story. And like the best fiction it’s alive with implications that reach beyond the immediate story. The film leaves you with a feeling of having glimpsed something essential about the way the world is now: a close, particular image of the anomie and dislocation that exist around the globe.
