Adapted from the novel by E.M. Forster, Lucy Honeychurch, a young Englishwoman, is touring Italy with her older cousin Charlotte, who is serving as her chaperone. At the hotel, Lucy is smitten by the handsome, George Emerson. Back in Surrey, England, Lucy is bothered by her socially snobbish fiancé, Cecil Vyse. He looks down at Lucy’s family as inferior. George Emerson reappears in Lucy’s life as he rents a nearby cottage. Lucy is conflicted: she’s impressed with the wealth and high social standing of Cecil, but she also feels love for the more philosophical and kindly George.
