Info
Axel North, a young drifter, arrives at a New York waterfront pier seeking employment as a longshoreman. He is hired by the cruel, sadistic boss, Charlie Malik. Axel quickly makes friends with Tommy Tyler, an experienced African-America employee. Axel moves into Tommy’s neighborhood and becomes acquainted with Lucy, Tommy’s wife. Tommy instructs Axel how to stand up to Charlie if he attempts to bully him. Charlie provokes Tommy into a fight and kills him. Axel witnesses the killing but hesitates to cooperate with the police. Lucy implores Axel to stand up for his friend. Axel is fearful of retribution by the longshoremen’s union, but he is also anxious that justice be served.
