Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
Docudrama | English, Xhosa, Afrikaans with English subtitles | 146 minutes
Info
Nelson Mandela fought against Apartheid in South Africa. When he resorted to violence, he was caught, tried, and spent 27 years in prison where he suffered harsh and brutal treatment. When he was released, his wife Winnie and his supporters urged Mandela to obtain weapons and fight for their freedom. Mandela explained to them that a peaceful approach would be the only way to achieve freedom and end Apartheid. He urged his followers the way to beat the white supremacists in the country was at the ballot box. This they did. Mandela shocked the world when he was elected president in racist South Africa. Instead of punishing his opponents, he forgave them and extended a peaceful hand. Despite his political successes, Mandela felt there was much more he could do for his people.

One thing about LONG WALK to FREEDOM that can’t be denied: Idris Elba gives a towering performance, a Mandela for the ages.
EIdris Elba’s towering performance lends LONG WALK to FREEDOM a Shakespearean breadth. His Mandela is an intensely emotional man whose body quakes in moments of sorrow and whose face is stricken with a bone-deep anguish. The carefully chosen words in his eloquent declarations of principle, spoken with gravity and deliberation, are deeply stirring.
