L’Amore consists of two episodes. Episode One, The Human Voice, is about an unnamed woman talking on the phone with her former lover. When it’s revealed he left her for another woman, the woman pleads that he not  take his lover to the same hotel in Marseilles where they both once stayed.

Episode Two, The Miracle, is the controversial one. It was condemned by the National Legion of Decency citing it as blasphemous. In this eposode, Nannina, a simple-minded, obsessively religious woman meets a bearded wanderer in the field. He gives her wine and she falls asleep. Months later, Nannina discovers she’s pregnant. She is convinced the stranger she met in the field was Saint Joseph. Ridiculed by the townspeople, she follows a goat to an empty church and gives birth to her child.
