After the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson becomes President of the United States. With the assistance of his wife Lady Bird, and the influence of Martin Luther King Jr., Johnson is fiercely determined to pass the Civil Rights Act before the next election. Southern Democrats like Richard Russell of Georgia attempt to add amendments to weaken the Act. Johnson overcomes a filibuster and the Act is passed. In the 1964 presidential election, despite losing the support of the Southern states, Johnson beats Goldwater in a landslide. Johnson’s major failure, the one that literally broke his heart, was Vietnam.
