Info
A An elderly, retired writer, Astrid Lindgren, sits at home in Sweden and reads fan letters from children around the world praising her books. They write how Astrid’s books changed their lives. The film flashes back to the 19-year old Astrid working as a typist and sometime reporter in a small village newspaper. At the job, Astrid falls in love with the chief editor, Reinhold Blomberg. Blomberg is 30 years older, in an unhappy marriage, and has seven children. That doesn’t deter Astrid. Astrid’s parents learn she’s pregnant; they are devastated and furious. To avoid scandal in the religious and uptight Swedish community, Astrid is forced to have her baby boy raised by Marie, a foster mother in Denmark. Blomberg is aware of the situation but cannot free himself from his marriage. When Marie becomes terminally ill, Astrid must go to Denmark and bring back her son to Sweden to live with her. Astrid emerges with a newfound self-confidence. She now has the courage to pursue her dream, writing her memorable stories for children around the world.

BECOMING ASTRID works because of the extraordinary performance, in the title role, by Alba August, a young actress whose every emotion is made manifest, like passing clouds or a burst of sunshine, on her uncannily expressive face.
BECOMING ASTRID has been finessed with such emotional care, the familiar conventions of the script never become a liability. The movie works just fine for Lindgren newcomers as well as Lindgren buffs; all you need, really, is an appreciation of moment-to-moment human contact.
