Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated on November 4, 1995 by Yigal Amir, a radical ultranationalist, during a political peace rally supporting the Oslo peace accords. Amir considered any accommodation to the Palestinians to be a betrayal of Israel. Furthermore, Amir labeled Rabin a bigger threat to Israel than the Arabs. As Amir consults with associates in his radical group and with influential rabbis, he is convinced that according to Talmudic law, Rabin must be stopped. He is also pushed by Geula, his like-minded mother. When a relationship with his longtime girlfriend Nava breaks up, Amir is ready to move ahead with his plans. Although a lawyer, Amir has learned the ways of an assassin: he’s proficient in using a semi-automatic weapon and he knows to load it with hollow-point bullets because they do the most damage. The outcome becomes a tragic page in Israeli history.

Those expecting a bombastic diatribe will encounter a film that is anything but. A chilling portrait of how fanaticism can grow and be enabled, this is a matter-of-fact film that moves with an inexorability toward its foregone conclusion.
The Israeli drama INCITEMENT grabs a third rail and holds on tight. The movie, directed by Yaron Zilberman, presents a discomfortingly close-range depiction of what Yigal Amir saw and heard in the roughly two years before he assassinated Yitzhak Rabin, the prime minister, on November 4, 1995. Zilberman gives the movie an extra charge by fluidly interweaving scenes of the dramatized Amir with news clips of political speeches and rallies. The overall sense is that, with conditions set, incitement is an easy, even passive process—and that Amir’s murder of Rabin is not only a tragedy, but also a cautionary tale.
