Based on a true story. Maud Dowley is afflicted with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis and is ordered by her brother Charles to live with her aunt Ida. Determined to be independent, Maud responds to an ad for a housekeeper placed by Everett Lewis, an eccentric local fishmonger. At first Everett is reluctant to hire the severely handicapped Maud. He eventually agrees and Maud has the strength to clean the unkempt shack and cook meals. Meanwhile, she finds the time to paint lovely birds and flowers on the walls and on pieces of wood. Sandra, a New Yorker vacationing in the area, spots Maud’s art and is captivated. To Everett’s shock, Sandra offers Maud $5 for each card Maud will paint for her. Feeling more independent and confident, Maud asks Everett to marry her and scotch the rumors around town that she’s a kept woman. Everett finds the idea not far-fetched as he’s fallen in love with Maud.
