The Invisibles
Docudrama | In German with English subtitles | 110 minutes
Info
Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels announced in May 1943 that Germany was at last “free of Jews.” However, 7,000 Jews managed to hide from the Nazi hunters but only 1,700 survived. The Claus Räfle film, The Invisibles, using a mix of interviews, docudrama, and film footage, tells the story of four of those “invisible” Jews. Their survival is attributed to resilience, luck, and help from others. Cioma Schönhaus, a talented graphic designer, finds work forging passports for Franz Kaufmann, a lawyer helping people escape Germany; Hanni Lévy dyes her hair blond so she can pass as an Aryan; Eugen Friede joins a resistance group publishing leaflets denouncing the Nazi Party; and Ruth Arndt hides in a factory until it’s liberated by the Russians. Many who helped the 1,700 Jews survive were honored by the State of Israel as “Righteous Among Nations.”

Getting testimony from Holocaust survivors in the film THE INVISIBLES is an essential work of historians. There is the urgency of reminding people this is what happened, this is what prejudice looks like in its most grotesque form.
One of the movie’s big successes is its actors’ abilities to convey their respective survivors’ tenacity and will power to live.
