Info

In 1980, the U.S. and the Soviet Union were in the midst of a bitter, dangerous Cold War. Neither country was ready to fight  on the battlefield, but the 1980 Winter Olympics was coming up. What better way to prove U.S. superiority than to beat the Soviets in the sport in which the Soviets were supreme: ice hockey. In preparation for the games, Herb Brooks, the head ice hockey coach at the University of Minnesota, was selected to be the coach. At first, working with a disparate group of players, Brooks had them practice and do drills for hours. The fiercely competitive Brooks drove them  harder after they lost an exhibition game to the Soviets. With help from his assistant coach, Craig Patrick, and straining his marriage to his wife Patti, Brooks finally got his team to gel. The Olympics begin and the U.S. team beats Czechoslovakia, Norway, Romania and West Germany. The moment has come: the game against the Soviet Union. It’s a memorable event watched by every sports fan around the world.

VARIETY

To make a movie about that team and those games requires more than an ability to depict personal dramas or re-enact game highlights. It requires the re-creation of a world and a mind-set, and MIRACLE accomplishes both brilliantly.

We all know the clichés of the modern sports movie, but MIRACLE sidesteps a lot of them. It’s about practicing hard and winning games.
