Eat Drink Man Woman

Comedy | Mandarin with English subtitles | 123 minutes

To his consternation, Tao Chu, a widower and master chef,  has three unmarried daughters: Chu Jia-Jen, a school teacher, Chu Jia-Chien, an airline executive, and Chu Jia- Ning, a college student. Every Sunday evening, Tao prepares a magnificent meal for his three daughters hoping they will have good news about their relationships with men. It’s a matter of Chinese custom. But these now-empty rituals produce disappointments. Tao laments, “I don’t understand any of them and I don’t want to.”  Tao’s exasperation is not limited to his daughters. Tao is also losing faith in his life and the diminishing popularity for  traditional cuisine. But life gets better: the daughters begin blossoming relationships and Tao finds someone special. And, yes, he’s going to get married!

Wonderfully seductive, EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN makes for an uncomplicatedly pleasant experience. Its thoughts about its characters don’t go much deeper than the bottom of a soup bowl, but those thoughts are still expressed with affection, wit, and an abundance of fascinating cooking tips.
