Info

Susan Weinblatt is a photographer who supports herself taking photos at bar mitzvahs and weddings. She’s ecstatic when a magazine buys three of her photos. Her happiness, however, is jolted when her roommate and best friend Anne Munroe moves out to get married. She starts an affair with Rabbi Gold, who handles many of the events she has photographed. But this relationship ends when Susan meets Rabbi Gold’s wife and son. Susan now has a real boyfriend, Eric and a shot at exhibiting her photos at a gallery. Susan reaches out to Anne with the good news but they end upon fighting. Anne is jealous of Susan’s independence; Susan is jealous of Anne’s marriage and child. At the gallery opening, all of Susan’s friends show up except Anne. After the show Susan visits Anne at her country house hoping to reconcile. Anne apologizes as the two women drink tequila. Their bonding is interrupted when Anne’s husband Martin arrives. Susan realizes that all is not well with that marriage as Anne confesses to Susan that she had an abortion. Anne does not want to have more children.

There’s little doubt that GIRLFRIENDS benefits substantially from Mayron’s incredibly appealing lead performance. The actress delivers an open, warm-hearted turn that ensures that Susan will remain a completely sympathetic figure from beginning to end.

Reel Film Reviews

The design is simple but the resulting pattern is complex and appealing. GIRLFRIENDS, the new film by Claudia Weill, is composed of so many small, deft scenes that one is reminded of a handsome piece of embroidery, lovingly made whole.
