During a rain storm, two truck drivers, Gorô and his younger sidekick Gun, stop off at a decrepit roadside ramen noodle diner. The struggling diner is owned by Tampopo, a widow. When Tampopo asks Gorô and Gun for an opinion of her noodles, they say “It’s sincere but lacks character.” Tampopo pleads for help and Gorô and Gun agree. They are determined to teach her the “art of noodle making.” They change the diner’s name from “Lai Lai” to “Tampopo.” Through clever trickery they steal noodle-making secrets from competitors. With help from Gorô and Gun, Tampopo masters the skills to make great noodles. The diner (now a restaurant) becomes a huge success. The main story is interspersed with vignettes of various people and their connections to food.

TAMPOPO offers the kind of sensory experience that demands a viewer’s complete surrender – to its sumptuous culinary imagery, to the subliminal aromas that seem to come wafting off the screen, and to a soundtrack alive with the sounds of food being prepared, cooked and devoured.
TAMPOPO is one of those utterly original movies that seems to exist in no known category. It’s a bemused meditation on human nature in which one humorous situation flows into another offhandedly, as if life were a series of smiles.
