Info
Maidan focuses on the protests by student activists, journalists, laborers, artists and clergy in Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. Taking place between November 21, 2013 and February 23, 2014, the protests and demonstrations were sparked by the Ukrainian government’s sudden decision not to sign the European Union-Ukraine Association Agreement, instead choosing closer ties to Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union. The protestors also demanded the resignation of the corrupt President Viktor Yanukovych. The protest led to the 2014 Revolution of Dignity.

Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa’s MAIDAN harkens back to the heroic, journalistic roots of documentary-making and yet feels ineffably modern and formally daring. It’s a tiny marvel of a movie.
MAIDAN is brilliant, timely, and a painfully relevant documentary. It’s profoundly affecting, eerie and, at times, strangely beautiful. And it will certainly put the passions of the current Ukrainian crisis into vivid context.
