Info

The major part of the Irish War of Independence takes place from 1919 to 1921, between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) headed by Michael Collins and Éamon de Valera, and the British Army.  Destruction and deaths occur as both sides fight to possess their portions of Ireland, the British in Northern Ireland and the IRA in the southern sections of the county. A cease-fire is called and Michael Collins goes to London to negotiate the Anglo-Irish Treaty which is signed in 1921.  The treaty does not grant Ireland independence but allows it to remain in the British Dominion while losing six  Ulster counties. Valera, a compatriot of Collins, is furious and rejects the Treaty. A split occurs and trouble in Ireland resumes.

At times incredibly violent, MICHAEL COLLINS nonetheless portrays this violence with little glamour in an attempt to show the searing passion, commitment and sacrifice of the Irish revolutionaries led by the charismatic Collins.

Beautifully shot by Chris Menges with strong visual drama and a sense of moody grandeur, MICHAEL COLLINS makes Dublin the stately backdrop for its mounting acts of sabotage.
