Info

Rahim is given a two-day leave from an Iranian debtor’s prison. Rahim borrowed money from a loan shark and was unable pay it back when it came due. Bahram, a family member, covered the loan but filed a claim against Rahim when Rahim was unable to pay him back. This led to Rahim’s incarceration. When Rahim’s girlfriend, Farkhondeh, finds a handbag with gold coins in it, Rahim figures this will clear his debt and set him free.  Instead, Rahim decides to return the handbag with the gold coins to the owner hoping this heroic deed will restore his reputation.  Bahram now faces  public pressure to go easy on Rahim.  But Bahram questions Rahim’s sudden altruistic streak forcing Rahim  to explain his motivations to a skeptical public. Could it be? Will Rahim be punished for doing a good deed?

Farhadi leads the viewer through a maze of moral complexities and comes out on the other side, just at a point when there seems to be no exit. The final shot is perfect: Not only does it evoke the way the movie begins, but it also captures so many of the movie’s ideas about family, honesty, and the difficulty of blotting out a dark stain.
