A Man Escaped
Drama | French with English subtitles | 99 minutes
Info
Lieutenant Fontaine, a French resistant fighter during World War II, is captured by the Nazis and imprisoned. Fontaine is taken to Gestapo headquarters where he’s informed he’ll be sentenced to death. Fontaine is determined to escape. Stealthily keeping a spoon he was given with his food, Fontaine uses it to chip away at the panels of the cell. He also manages to scrounge cloth and material to weave an escape rope with a metal hook. When another prisoner, Jost, is assigned to share Fontaine’s cell, Fontaine must decide whether to include Jost in his escape or kill him. Fontaine allows Jost to join him and the two must find the means and the courage to pull off a daring escape.

It’s raw and lean with a man’s unblinking realization that he must get himself out of the prison or certainly be put to death.
It is the greatest of all prison-break movies. The prisoner’s lonely ardor is enhanced by Mozart’s Mass in C Minor; the ending of the movie, as the music wells up, is pure elation.
