Info

Jo is a 17-year-old teenager living in the post-industrial area of Salford, England. Her mother, Helen, is an alcoholic,  promiscuous, rarely at home. Jimmy, a young black sailor coming off his ship, notices Jo has fallen and scraped her knee. Jimmy invites Jo to come on the ship so he can attend the wound. Jimmy and Jo develop an intimate relationship. Helen remarries  and notifies Jo she must fend for herself. Jo leaves school, gets a job in a shoe shop, and rents an apartment. Jo meets a kindly art student, Geof, and they decide to live together. When Jo discovers she’s pregnant with Jimmy, Geof is supportive and even suggests they marry.  Helen’s marriage falls apart and she moves in with Jo. An angry Geof packs his things and moves out. Jo races after him. Jo worries  her one human link to humanity may slip away.

Shelagh Delaney’s A TASTE of HONEY, which justifiably drew theatergoers like flies, to London and Broadway, is more memorable on film. The British-made drama has been given specifically effective scope in the movie medium.
