Retired small-town lawyer Paul Biegler is contacted by Laura Manion to defend her husband Lieutenant Frederick “Manny” Manion. Manny is being charged for the murder of innkeeper Bernard Quill. Manny does not deny the murder, but claims he was mentally deranged when he heard Quill raped his wife. At the trial the prosecution is led by high-powered Claude Dancer from the Attorney General’s office. As the two sides battle it out, wise, old Judge Weaver is there to decide tough legal issues. Paul Biegler and his assistant, Parnell McCarthy, have the tough task of proving that Manny was temporarily insane when he committed the murder.
