Blow Out

Drama | English | 108 minutes

Info

While in post-production for a low-budget film, sound technician Jack Terry is told by the producer to record more realistic sound effects. Jack goes to the local park to record sounds of the wind, birds, the rustle of trees. While recording, Jack sees a car careen off a stone bridge and plunge in the creek below. He rushes to the rescue. The driver is dead but Jack is able to save the young woman, Sally Bedina.  Jack is attracted to Sally and asks her out. Jack learns the driver of the car was Governor George McRyan, a politician with aspirations to be president.  Jack listens to the audio tape and he is certain he hears a gunshot before the blow out.   Jack  learns that another person, Manny Karp, was also at the scene filming the accident. Jack carefully observes Karp’s film from a news report. He notices a visible flash and smoke from a fired gun. Jack is  convinced that McRyan was murdered. Sally agrees to help Jack investigate the crime. But Jack is unaware of the  evil intrigue  going on and the danger he subsequently faces. This was not what he expected when he went to rescue passengers drowning in a deep water creek.

BLOW OUT is inhabited by a real cinematic intelligence. The audience is not condescended to. We share the excitement of figuring out how things develop and unfold, when so often  movies only need us as passive witnesses.

BLOW OUT is the work of a high-spirited, irrepressible director. The set-pieces are done with precise, comic timing, including the initial automobile accident and Jack’s saving of Sally from the car that has sunk into 20 feet of water.
