Drama | French with English subtitles | 110 minutes
When Chloé, a young museum attendant, experiences abdominal pain, her doctor informs her the cause is depression and she should see a psychiatrist. Her psychiatrist, Paul, is warm and sympathetic. They fall in love and move in together. In the street, Chloé sees Paul embracing a woman. Chloé is outraged and confronts Paul about his dalliance. It’s later revealed that it was not Paul whom Chloé saw on the street but his twin brother, Louis, another psychiatrist. As her lover, Paul can no longer treat Chloé. Confused and intrigued, Chloé requests that Louis treat her. With both Paul and Louis hovering over her, Chloé begins to recognize that sometimes there is a dangerous passive-aggressive dynamic between two siblings born as twins.

What gives the film its surprising coherence is not only the fluidity of Ozon’s technique but also his mastery of tone, the ease with which he applies serious craft to a resolutely un-serious endeavor. The filmmaker’s cackle is always audible beneath the story’s glassy, deadpan surface.
The doubling imagery, the recurring spiral staircases, and so much else engulfing Chloé make this thriller unusually engrossing.
