Hedvig Jensen is a tightrope walker at a circus performing under the name Elvira Madigan. While in Denmark, she meets Lt. Sixten Sparre, and they fall in love. They decide to run away together. But running away also means that Sixten, an army officer, becomes a deserter. As runaways, both have tough times getting work and supporting themselves. It’s then an old friend of Sixten advises him leave Hedvig before the relationship becomes destructive.
