After her governess gets married, Emma Woodhouse, a congenial but naive young woman, proudly takes credit for bringing the couple together. Emma now considers herself the official matchmaker in her small community. Emma next schemes to match Mr. Elton, the village minister, with her friend, Harriet Smith, a rather unsophisticated woman. But when Mr.Elton instead shows an interest in Emma, she rejects his advances. Over the next few months, Emma manipulates her various friends and acquaintances seeking to make the right matches. But Emma finally realizes that the best match for her is to find the right partner.

Gwyneth Paltrow shines brightly as Jane Austen’s most endearing character, the disastrously self-assured matchmaker Emma Woodhouse. A fine cast, speedy pacing and playful direction make this a solid contender for the Austen sweepstakes.
Gwyneth Paltrow makes a resplendent Emma, gliding through the film with an elegance and patrician wit that brings the young Katharine Hepburn to mind.
