Info
From Here to Eternity consists of intertwining stories  taking place at Schofield Barracks on Oahu, Hawaii. The time is 1941.  Private Prewitt was a boxer who stopped fighting when he blinded an opponent. Captain Dana Holmes wants Prewitt on his regimental team. When Prewitt refuses, he is hazed by Holmes and the NCOs. Prewitt is supported by his close friend Private Maggio. Maggio’s contrary behavior and a night of drunkenness has him ending up in the stockade where the sadistic head, “Fatso” Judson brutalizes him. While in one of the local clubs, Prewitt falls for Lorene, a sultry hostess. Meanwhile, Captain Holmes’s First Sergeant, Milton Warden, has an affair with the Captain’s wife, Karen. While these relationships unravel, not always successfully,  Japanese naval and air forces attack Pearl Harbor, killing over 3,000 Americans. For the U.S., it’s the beginning of World War II.

Out of FROM HERE to ETERNITY,” a novel whose anger and compassion stirred post-war reading public as few works have, Columbia and a company of sensitive hands have forged a film almost as towering and persuasive as its source. Credit Fred Zinnemann with an export directorial achievement in maintaining these various involvements on equal and lucid levels.
