Info
In 1963 France, Anne, a young, precocious student with an eye on becoming a writer, becomes pregnant after a one-night stand. She sees her life slipping away. To the surprise of her professor she starts failing her exams. She is examined by Dr. Ravinsky who confirms her pregnancy. When Anne asks the doctor to “do something,” he refuses, warning her abortion is illegal in France. If caught, both would end up in jail. Anne then tries to destroy the fetus using a knitting needle. With scenes both unassuming and rapturous, Diwan stubbornly validates and celebrates the equality of a woman’s desire. What a rare treat in a punishing world that denies women that parity.
Director/writer Audrey Diwan shows you a woman who desires, desires to learn, have sex, bear children on her terms, be sovereign – a woman who, in choosing to live her life, risks becoming a criminal and dares to be free.
