Toby and Tanner Howard, two impoverished brothers whose ranch is facing foreclosure, pull off several robberies at different branches of the Texas Midlands Bank. They are pursued by Marcus Hamilton, a Texas Ranger, close to retirement. Marcus catches them in their final heist. Toby escapes, Tanner is killed. When Toby discovers oil on his property he becomes wealthy and politically powerful. In order to protect himself and his family, Toby deposits his money with the Texas Midlands Bank. The bank will not reveal Toby’s past crimes for fear of losing management of Toby’s family trust. After he retired, Marcus visits the now wealthy Toby. Marcus wants to know why Toby committed the robberies.  Toby responds  it was “frontier justice.” At this time he has enough money so his sons will not be poor like he was. Marcus departs but vows he will return to “finish the conversation” and “bring some peace.”

Why Stream This Film?
Impoverished West Texas landowners, facing foreclosure by the banks, are desperate. In this case the landowner brothers turn to robbing the banks that are doing the foreclosing. It’s definitely criminal behavior  but Hell or High Water manages to make you feel a bit of compassion for these pathetic criminals.

It’s an action-thriller with punch. Bridges gives the characterization ballast and heft and Pine and Foster bring a new, grizzled maturity to their performances.
Peter Bradshaw

The Guardian

If there’s such a thing as an easygoing thriller, then HELL or HIGH WATER is it. The stakes may be steep, but the characters can seem more nonchalant than nervous. Maybe it’s as simple as the heat: In the roasted landscape of West Texas, where the cops-and-robbers tale plays out, nothing moves faster than it has to.
Jeanette Catsoulis

The New York Times

This one’s a goodie–a mesmerizing modern-day Western that moves with the coiled intensity of a rattlesnake ready to spring.
Peter Travers

Rolling Stone

HELL or HIGH WATER is a thrillingly good movie–a crackerjack drama of crime, fear, and brotherly love set in a sun-roasted, deceptively sleepy West Texas that feels exotic for being so authentic.
Owen Gleiberman
