Info

I Remember Mama is the poignant, autobiographical story of the Hansons, a Norwegian immigrant family, living in San Francisco. The family is ruled by Marta (Mama), the loving but stern matriarch, who cares for her  four children and her husband, Lars. The film weaves the stories of many   family members: daughter Katrin writing her first novel, the wedding of Marta’s sister, Trina, the death of Uncle Chris, Dagmar’s illness, and the impoverished lodger, Jonathan Hyde, reading Charles Dickens to the family.  Katrin is devastated when her novel is rejected by multiple publishers. Katrin is told by one publisher  she should write about what she knows best, perhaps her family. When she does just that, her  book is published. Excited, she brings a copy home and reads it to her family. The book, relating stories about family members, ends with the line, “But first and foremost, I remember Mama.”
