In the House

Drama | French with English subtitles | 105 minutes

Info

Germain is a middle-aged  teacher in a French high school. Complaining to his wife, Jeanne, Germain tells her   Claude is the only student in his class with the potential of writing good fiction.  Germain decides to privately tutor Claude. Claude gets a job tutoring math to  Rapha, a slow classmate. The tutoring takes place in Rapha’s home where Claude comes in contact with Esther, Rapha’s gorgeous, sexy mother. As Claude imagines having a sexual encounter with Esther, he expresses these fantasies in his writing assignment. Germain reads Claude’s assignment to his wife Jeanne and they both become intrigued, aroused,  shocked! Germain encourages Claude to continue writing  what he is fantasizing. Soon, Claude fulfills his fantasies and has sex not   only with Esther, but  with Germain’s wife, Jeanne. As typical with Ozon, all the loose ends  are never completely resolved.

IN the HOUSE, from the eclectic French filmmaker François Ozon, is an almost perverse delight, an egghead thriller that slyly shell-games its truer purpose. Sympathies shift but in the end there’s only one person perfectly in charge here, and that’s Ozon.
