Julius Caesar
Drama | English | 121 minutes
Info
After a triumphant military victory, Julius Caesar enters Rome with his troops, cheered by an adulating crowd. But many Roman senators fear Caesar will dissolve the republic and appoint himself as monarch. Cassius, the main rebel, convinces the timid Brutus, that although he and Caesar are friends, the only way to stop the ambitious Caesar is to assassinate him. This they do. Brutus’s participation in the assassination prompts Caesar to say, before he succumbs, the searing words, “Et tu, Brute?” At the funeral, Caesar’s closest ally, Mark Antony, delivers an electrifying eulogy that shames those who committed the murderous act.

Next to John Gielgud’s Cassius, the delight and surprise of the film is Marlon Brando’s Antony. It’s something memorable to see. Athletic and bullet-headed, he looks the realist Roman of them all and possesses the fire of hot convictions and the firm elasticity of steel.
A tense, melodramatic story, clearly presented, and excellently acted by one of the finest casts assembled for a film.
