LE CERCLE ROUGE involves an escaped prisoner, a diamond heist, a police manhunt and mob vengeance. Director Jean-Pierre Melville treats these elements as the magician treats his cards: the cards are insignificant, except as the medium through which he demonstrates his skills. There is one cool, understated scene after another.
Melville films this suspenseful and violent story with tight-lipped precision – he’s fascinated by the balletic grace of these life-and-death combatants, and by the depth of hard-won knowledge on which their deadly power depends.
