Shortly after the abrupt firing of Eric Dale, head of risk management at an investment banking firm, Eric warns his associate, Peter Sullivan, the firm is in a very dangerous situation. They hold a portfolio of questionable mortgage-backed securities that now must be dumped. The news gets to Sam Rogers, the floor head, who confirms the frightening revelation. Through the night they hold an emergency meeting to discuss how the firm will stay afloat. To avoid bankruptcy they must betray their clients by selling them securities they know to be junk. By dawn, CEO John Tuld, arrives via helicopter to make the final call. Will he heed what Shakespeare wrote in Julius Caesar, “I cherish honor more than I fear death?”

Perhaps nothing in the film quite compares to the horrid chill of the early sacking scene, but this is a shrewd and confident drama.
It is a tale of greed, vanity, myopia and expediency that is all the more damning for its refusal to moralize.
MARGIN CALL employs an excellent cast who can make financial talk into compelling dialogue.
