The film is set in 19th-century England, eight years after Anne was persuaded by others to reject Captain Wentworth’s proposal of marriage. Anne was  told Wentworth had poor prospects and  inferior social standing. When Anne’s father leaves on an extended trip, he rents part of his estate to Wentworth’s relatives. While visiting her sister Mary, Anne meets Wentworth for the first time since their breakup. Wentworth is now successful and wealthy. However, still hurt by Anne’s rejection eight years ago, Wentworth avoids her. Anne must now address her confused feelings for Wentworth and decide if their relations can be restored.
