Osamu, his wife Noboyu, and son Shota live with family members in a cramped Tokyo apartment. Not having much money, Osamu and Shota shoplift for provisions and food. One cold night they see a young girl, Yuri, freezing on her apartment balcony. Her family doesn’t seem to care about her. Osamu brings Yuri home, feeding her dinner. But when Osamu observes that Yuri has been beaten, he refuses to return her home. Yuri bonds with her new family and Shota teaches her to be a shoplifter. When Osamu hears the police are looking for Yuri, Noboyu cuts her hair, burns her clothers, and renames her Lin. Family members are aware that the abduction of Yuri is illegal, even amoral, and this begins to take a toll on their well-being.
