Drama | French with English subtitles | 108 minutes
In Vichy France during World War II, Marie is impoverished, raising two children in a squalid apartment while waiting for her prisoner-of-war husband, Paul, to return. A pregnant neighbor tries to abort but is unsuccessful. Marie helps with the procedure and the abortion is successful. Word gets out and other women, seeking abortions, contact Marie. Subsequently, Marie has ample money to feed her children, hire a maid and move to a larger apartment. Paul returns. But the war disabled him emotionally and he can’t hold a job. Losing interest in Paul, Marie encourages the maid to have an affair with him while Marie cavorts with her lover. When Paul finds out, he threatens to inform the police of Marie’s illegal business. If Marie is convicted, she will surely face death by guillotine.
