Taste of Cherry
1997 | Drama | 95 minutes | Persian with English subtitles
Having completed digging his grave, Mr. Badii, a suicidal middle-aged man, must find someone to bury him. Badii drives around Tehran in his Range Rover trying to recruit someone to do this job. He tries to convince a Kurdish soldier on leave and an Afghan seminarian. Both turn him down. Eventually, Badii meets Mr. Bagheri, an Azeri taxidermist, who seems willing. But then Bagheri compellingly tries to talk Badii out of killing himself. Badii is torn: should he end his life or continue living?

TASTE of CHERRY is a small triumph of filmmaking. Through quiet insinuation, the film evokes sadness without being sentimental, has universal resonance without sacrificing personal immediacy, and generates real drama without resorting to contrivance.
There’s a strong elliptical quality to Kiarostami’s style which underlines the filmmaker’s ability to maintain focus with considerable emotional force and depth and with great precision.
