The Measure of a Man

Drama | French with English subtitles | 135 minutes

It’s been a little more than a year when Thierry Taugourdeau and seven hundred other factory workers were abruptly laid off. Thierry has had fruitless meetings with counsellors who can only advise him in ways to gussy up his resume. With a wife and a disabled son, and unemployment running out, a desperate Thierry considers selling his mobile home. But then, luckily, Thierry lands a job as a security guard in a large department store. However, it’s not the kind of job Thierry wants: in addition to nabbing shoplifters, he is asked to spy on fellow workers who may be pilfering merchandise.  Thierry must  decide: should he hang on to a job he despises or retreat to  dealing with unsympathetic job counsellors?

Vincent Lindon (Thierry Taugourdeau) / Karine De Mirbeck (Thierry’s wife) / Matthieu Schaller (Thierry’s son)

Stéphane Brizé’s film THE MEASURE of a MAN feels so real you’re almost startled when it’s over. It’s a small film that touches on larger issues: the world of work and how it defines us. You leave feeling you’ve met someone and wishing him well.

THE MEASURE of a MAN provides one of France’s greatest actors with a showcase to demonstrate his uncommon gifts. It may be a hard film to watch but with Lindon’s great performance at its center, it is one from which you cannot look away.
