To Leslie

Drama | English | 119 minutes

Info

Leslie, a West Texas single mother, wins  $190,000 in a local lottery. But being an alcoholic, her money is gone in a few years. Leslie’s life is bleak as she is thrown out of her motel room for nonpayment of rent. She is helped by her son James and mother Nancy. They take her in but when she continues to drink heavily, they force her to leave. Leslie returns to the motel to retrieve her suitcase when Sweeney, the kindhearted manager, offers her a job cleaning the rooms after guests depart. As Leslie seizes this opportunity she suffers from alcohol withdrawal. Leslie drifts away but Sweeney continues to help her. With Sweeney’s guidance she decides to renovate an abandoned ice cream shop to a diner. There’s a glimmer of hope for Leslie as she realizes that perhaps Sweeney has deeper, more loving, feelings for her.

TO LESLIE is a deceptively simple yet heart-wrenching character study. It’s a complex portrait of the ways in which trauma and addiction haunt a working-class white family in the South.
