In a Kurdish refugee camp in Iraq in 2003, thirteen-year-old Soran, known by the locals as Satellite, organizes gangs of children to disarm land mines  he can then sell to arms dealers. Additionally, he gets his nickname  buying and installing TV satellites in the villages. The villagers are anxious to follow the news on television about the U.S. imminent invasion of Iraq to depose the hated Saddam Hussein. Soon, Soran falls in love with teenager Agrin, who, alone, cares for  her disabled brother Hengov, and their two-year-old brother, Riga. As the invasion commences Soran learns more about Agrin and her past. He begins to realize how powerless he is in a world that seems to have no place for children like him.
