At the height of his career, screenwriter Dalton Trumbo is questioned by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) regarding his former membership in the Communist Party. Trumbo refuses to answer the Committee hoping to appeal the conviction to a Supreme Court with a liberal majority. Trumbo is also counting on his friend, Edward G. Robinson, to help pay his legal expenses. Trumbo’s plan fails when two liberal Supreme Court justices die and Robinson backs out fearing it would damage his career. Trumbo is sentenced to serve eleven months. After serving his time, a blacklisted Trumbo works anonymously writing the screenplay for the film The Brave One. The film wins an Oscar but Trumbo is not honored as the writer. After ten unproductive years, Trumbo received an opportunity from Kirk Douglas to write the script for Spartacus and from Otto Preminger to do the same for Exodus. Douglas and Preminger defy the Committee and threats from right-wing journalist Hedda Hopper and announce that Trumbo wrote their films. The blacklist was finally broken when President John F. Kennedy supported Spartacus and Trumbo’s role in writing the script. It was too late for many actors and writers to recover, but those who could subsequently began the big job of rebuilding their careers.

What makes the movie work are the lively performances, both from the supporting cast and from Cranston.”
Bryan Cranston finally translates his critical acclaim for BREAKING BAD into an Oscar-caliber performance in the darkly comic TRUMBO, playing an eloquent, witty screenwriter who bucked the Hollywood blacklist and triumphed. It’s a crackling good story, and Cranston does a great job portraying a man who made great sacrifices for his principles–and the effect it had on his family.
Bryan Cranston brings the complex personality of Trumbo to life with substance and humor.
