Info
Shea Brennan was a former captain in the Union Army during the Civil War and his current partner, Thomas, was his loyal sergeant. Shea and Thomas are hired to lead a wagon train manned with inexperienced German and Slavic immigrants, from Ft. Worth, Texas to Oregon. Shea hires a capable gunman and farmer, James Dutton, to accompany the wagon train. James’s wife Margaret, daughter Elsa, and young son, John, make the trek as well. The first tragedy is crossing a major river. Many of the immigrants can’t swim and drown and the food wagon is lost. Next, a tornado destroys many of the wagons and scatters the livestock. Shea recommends they cut short their journey and settle in the Colorado territory. James defies Shea and decides to continue on to Oregon. During their journey west, James encounters the leader of the Crow tribe who convinces James to settle instead in the Montana Territory. The Crow leader calls this land “Paradise.” James does so and settles with his family in Montana. A year later, the dream of Shea and Thomas comes true: they reach Oregon and the Pacific Ocean. bravely carries on.

1883 isn’t exactly a fun road trip. But that seems to be the point. It’s a grim reminder that the wagon-worn, horse-beaten trails leading to supposed freedom are not just littered with abandoned supplies, outlaws, or even the bones of the unlucky. They’re also littered with big questions about the costs and benefits of westward expansion. The Old West gets the Taylor Sheridan treatment in a harrowing yarn of survival, justice and freedom.
A gritty, bone-smashing, beautiful and brilliant contemporary Western.
