Info

Billy McBride is a disgraced lawyer, one who drank too much and was forced out of the Goliath law firm he started with Donald Cooperman. Billy has hit rock bottom, scrounging for clients, and fighting to stay alive. A DUI lawyer, Patty Solis-Papagian, refers a liability case to Billy. It has  to do with the mysterious death of a worker at a well-connected defense contractor. When Billy finds out that the company is being represented by Cooperman and the firm that ousted him, he smells redemption. He takes the case. The case becomes complicated in that Billy’s ex-wife, Michelle, a powerful lawyer, works for Cooperman. Billy and Cooperman are now fierce adversaries: one a highly polished, smooth attorney vs. a fragile alcoholic lawyer who is hanging on to life by a thread. Aren’t you interested in how this turns out?

Why Stream This Film?
It’s film noir in the modern age. A has-been, tortured lawyer, Billy McBride, has a shot at redemption representing a client who is suing a major defense contractor that is represented by the law firm that kicked him out. It’s Billy vs. his hateful ex-partner. But Billy realizes that truth is a rare commodity and that the scales of justice are almost always more heavily weighted toward the rich and powerful.  The entire series works brilliantly because of its great cast, especially Billy Bob Thornton.

Unlike many streaming dramas, each episode of “GOLIATH” has a satisfying structure, and the series exudes a notable sense of forward movement. This allows the stellar cast to wring evocative moments of intensity, pathos, and sly humor from the solid spine constructed  by David Kelley and his writers. As McBride, Thornton is capable of seamlessly transitioning from quiet sadness and empathy to petulant rage. Even though he’s at the end of his tether, the man’s tenacity is something to behold.

VARIETY

“GOLIATH” is the sort of drama you only find on television, like Billy’s ex-wife Michelle still working at this old firm and Billy being harassed by a string of shady characters after he takes the case. But it’s mostly forgivable since the mystery is so intriguing and the characters so vibrant. David Kelley is used to working in the procedural mode, but what he’s created here is more of a film noir, with the down-and-out detective trying to do the right thing in seedy LA with one little case that has the ability to shake the halls of power.
