Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street is the true story of Bernie Madoff and the way he criminally operated a $60 billion Ponzi scheme. Money came pouring in from investors who didn’t care how Madoff was doing it as long as he was producing high returns. Working secretly on the 17th floor of an office building in New York, his wife, Ruth, and his sons Mark and Andrew, supposedly knew little of what he was doing. Despite warnings of wrongdoing, the SEC, enamored by Madoff’s reputation, chose to look the other way. Eventually the Ponzi scheme crashed destroying the lives of hundreds of investors. Madoff was indicted, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison. Madoff died from natural causes at the age of 82 in prison. His son Mark committed suicide; his son Andrew died of lymphoma six years later.

Director Joe Berlinger walks us through the Madoff’s Ponzi playbook and explains how he was able to get away with so many crimes for so long. We get a sense it was a combination of an obsessive need to prove himself, an almost pathological desire to be admired and loved, and an utter lack of empathy for his fellow man and woman.
