Maid

Series | English | 1 season (10 episodes). Each episode is between 47 and 60 minutes.

Info

The series is inspired by Stephanie Land’s memoir, “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive.” Alex, is a young mother living in Seattle. Reaching the end of endurance, Alex, with her toddler daughter, Maddy,  leaves her abusive husband, Sean.   Alex and Maddy  find themselves homeless as Alex, looking for assistance,  deals with layers of governmental red tape. Alex’s mother, Paula, though well-meaning, is mentally deranged and cannot offer any help. To provide shelter and food, Alex lands a job cleaning homes while planning to become a writer.  Sean, meanwhile, keeps pushing a reluctant Alex to return home. When Alex receives a scholarship to the writing program at the University of Montana, Alex informs Sean she’s leaving Seattle and moving to Montana with Maddy. A ballistic Sean threatens to bring this dispute to court. Alex is hoping there is a thread of decency in Sean and he doesn’t block her from achieving her dream.

MAID is careful in how it details each step of Alex’s attempt to escape poverty, so that little things that would be forgettable elsewhere – a small job going well, a friend opening her door without judgment – land with a thunderbolt force. Have tissues handy as much for the happy parts as the sad. This is a great one.

There are many moments found within MAID where I just said WOW. It was the overall package, one that blossomed into a show that left me laughing as often as I was crying.
