In a bleak suburb of Philadelphia, police detective Mare Sheehan is juggling two crimes: the recent murder of a teenage mother and a young girl missing for almost a year. Mare is also trying to keep her own life from falling apart which includes a divorce, a son who committed suicide, dealing with her overbearing mother, Helen, a custody battle with her former daughter-in-law,  a fractious relationship with her teenage daughter, and the unwelcome assignment of  Colin Zabel, an aggressive assistant detective. But through it all, Mare is resilient and determined to find solutions to the crimes she’s investigating and her personal life.
